So, what is coaching? Many definitions have been attempted, but the one I favour is:
“Unlocking people’s potential to maximize their own performance. It is helping them to learn rather than teaching them.” (Whitmore, 2009).
It’s a thought-provoking one-to-one conversational process for anyone, in any walk of life. My coaching approach is to rapidly establish a trusted working relationship, based on active listening, empathy and insight. I draw great satisfaction from guiding individuals to “aha!” moments of clarity, which herald the realisation of the need for beneficial changes in thinking or behaviour.
I’ve found that lasting results cannot be expected from a single coaching session, so (after a free “chemistry session”) I’ve put together a package of three coaching sessions of up to 90 minutes. These can be at your office, or a public place (café, hotel foyer etc.) or online, as you prefer.
Mentoring differs from coaching in that it involves advising, guiding, even teaching. It follows that experience in a particular field is a prerequisite. My particular specialisms are:
As with coaching, I’d recommend a free "chemistry session" followed by a package of three mentoring sessions of up to 90 minutes each.
Maybe you’re responsible for a team of managers – all of whom would benefit from learning some coaching skills, so as to maximize the performance of their subordinates? Group coaching is a great way to get started, and can be arranged for anything from an hour to half a day.
Individuals may then prefer to improve their own soft skills by arranging for some one-to-one coaching or mentoring sessions in addition to the group session(s).
